LASER CUTTER RULES

Authorized Users: Only trained and authorized personnel may use the laser cutter. If you are unsure about whether you are

authorized please see the Sr. Adm. Asst. for Design to be sure.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

PRE-USE

  • Plan your work.
    • Account for how long the job will take.
    • Review product Safety Data Sheets for material specific information. See Approved Materials below.
  • Prior to use inspect the area and laser cutter.
    • Do not attempt to use the laser cutter if it is tagged “Out-of-Service”.
    • Ensure there are no objects stored against the laser cutter.
    • Verify the exhaust hose is connected between the laser cutter and vent.
    • Ensure all room exit doors and the floor are clear of obstructions (check both sides of doors).
    • Verify a fire extinguisher is available.
    • Verify the location and operation of a phone.

AT THE LASER CUTTER

  • For startup and use, verify all settings and materials before starting the cutting, etching or engraving job.
  • Do NOT leave the machine while it is being used.
  • Do NOT stare at the laser while it is in use.
  • Do NOT put your hands in machine while it is running. Wait for the proper cool down period before opening the machine to retrieve your materials.
  • Eating and drinking in the room is prohibited.
  • In case of fire. USE the fire extinguisher next to the machine. If you do not know how to use a fire extinguisher, please get training before you use the machine.
  • If a fire has occurred you must call 911 and have the Yale Fire Department inspect the site. Report the incident to the Responsible Person as soon as you are able to.

AFTER USE

  • Ensure the unit is completely off.
  • Log out of the computer attached to the machine.
  • Remove and clean up all materials inside and around the laser cutter.
  • Report all concerns, incidents and near-misses to the Responsible Person.
  • If there is a maintenance issue place an “Out-of-Service” tag on the machine and contact the Responsible Person immediately.

APPROVED MATERIALS

  • The following materials are approved for use: acrylic, aluminum (engrave only), bristol board, cardboard, cardstock, cork, chip board, felt, illustration board, mat board, mdf, paper, polyester film, vellum, wood (hardwood, plywood)
  • Any materials not approved must include a documented review and approval by the Responsible Person.
